Concha- a sweet bread topped with a streusel dough that is a popular breakfast food in Mexico, served with coffee or even hot chocolate! I take Spanish at my middle school, and the classes got the chance to either cook a Latin American dish or create a presentation about a Latin American country for extra credit. So, I chose to bake something, obviously!
About the Conchas
Conchas are made out of a dough that is pretty similar to a brioche dough, so they are very soft and fluffy! There are two flavors of streusel: the brown streusel is flavored with cocoa powder, and the pink streusel is just the plain streusel dough, which tastes like a sugar cookie. Cinnamon is the main flavor in a concha. The word "concha" in Spanish means "seashell", which is why conchas are typically decorated to look like clam shells. Cool, right?
I spent about 5-7 hours baking three batches of conchas so there would be enough for all of my classmates! Taking these to school was really exciting for me because it was my first time bringing something that I baked to school, and everyone in my class, my teachers, and friends enjoyed the conchas! A few classmates actually tried to convince me that I should give them more conchas and fought over each other to grab one from the table, so I was very entertained during the whole class! I’m so glad that I chose to make and bring the conchas to school, and it made me really happy to see everyone’s reactions to them (especially since I was worried that something would go wrong). Eating a concha with a cup of hot chocolate was also the best snack and way to relax after a whole week of midterm exams!
I hope you enjoyed reading about my fun experience making these conchas (I have a feeling I'll be making them again soon), and be sure to check out my Instagram as well!
